Activities - Included

Our complimentary property tour takes  about 1 - 1/12 hours and will orient you to the location of all of our trails, cabins, gardens and beaches. It includes an introduction to tropical plants and the symbiotic relationships they have with different insects, birds and animals.

We will also learn about the primary rainforest medicinal plants, wild orchids and the diversity of the rainforest. During the walk we will taste some of the tropical landscape leaves like maringa, katuk, red hibiscus, and brazilian spinach. These super nutritious plants provide leaves for some of our tropical salads.

Learn how chocolate is made and see our extensive gardens where we are growing pineapples, cashew, plantains, bananas, mango, avocado, rambutan, yucca, papaya, castana (breadnut), cas and lechee. You are  always welcome to taste during the tour.

Due to the abundant fruits, the tremendous diversity of Piedras Blancas National Park and 4 eco systems in a close proximity, a wide range of birds can be spotted on any given day.

The primary rainforest area surrounding Saladero supports hundreds of different species of birds, including the Fiery-billed Aracari and the Blue-crowned Motmot as well as the endangered Scarlet Macaws, a variety of trogons and many, many more. Toucans and tanagers abound and the delightful "purrrrrrr" of hummingbirds can be heard in the mornings around the ginger  bracts. Bring your field guide and binoculars and you will absolutely be delighted by the diversity.  For a complete list of the birds identified in the area, click this link: regenwald

GENERAL INFORMATION

Guests are welcome to use our kayaks free of charge.  The waters of the Golfo Dulce are most tranquil here in front of the Playa Saladero and offer a wide range of possibilities.

By kayak you can float over the surface of the clear waters and watch for rays, sea turtles, dolphins and all types of fish. You can try your hand at fishing with our equipment or kayak to a close by coral reef for a day of snorkeling. Birdwatching and hunting for miniscule orchids in the extensive network of mangrove habitat at the Rio Esquinas is only a 10 minute paddle North of Saladero.

Leisurely paddle along the coastline and spot wildlife in and out of the water at your own pace.  Dolphins are a common sight and humpback whales return year after year to use the deep gulf waters as a breeding ground and also nursing baby whales. You might even be lucky enough to see a plankton eating whale shark.

Kayakers often spot capuchin monkeys picking fruits from the shoreline trees.

A 15 minute kayak trip South of Saladero is a local cove called Ballenas with a beautiful palm shaded beach. Have a private picnic (we can make you a lunch to go) and snorkel at the crystal clear coral reef just off the beach.

Fancy yourself a fisherman?  Fishing by kayak is the ultimate “roots” fishing experience. World record snook, huge grouper, red snapper, cero mackerel, roosterfish, jacks and  barracuda await your lure. Fishing equipment and lures are provided free of charge.

Our newest addition to activities, the stand up board paddling, is a hit. Easy to do in the calm waters of the Golfo Dulce and visibility is fantastic
